Hardware inside the Hudl 2

Category: chipsets,standalone chipwpgeorge @ 10:01 am

I am starting to gather some information related to hardware inside Tesco’s flagship Hudl 2 tablet recently out.

First, it has a 1.83GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3735D CPU.

This CPU model was launched in Quarter 1, 2014

http://ark.intel.com/products/80272/Intel-Atom-Processor-Z3735D-2M-Cache-up-to-1_83-GHz

Based on the definition from Notebookcheck.net, the chip is already used in Netbooks and based on Intel’s Silvermont architecture

Here’s an example of one such Netbook, the Voyo WinPad (running on a Windows platform)

Here’s the output of the lsmod command so that we can see some of the drivers that are loaded:

 The BCM4434 – WiFi

This is the WiFi Card.  The BCM4434 is described on Broadcomm’s web page.

AR0543- the Aptina Camera sensor driver

This is hardware by Aptina (Micron) and its technical data is available from the manufacturer’s website

Additional Information

Tesco goes for the jugular with the hudl 2, and serves up an attractive, 8.3in Full-HD Android device for only £129

Xperia Tipo ST21i gets a larger user base into Android 4.0+

Category: chipsets,Device descriptionwpgeorge @ 8:47 pm

The Xperia Tipo is a lightweight, entry-level smartphone with many features found in their more advanced Xperia relatives.

I found through its pdbadb.net profile that this phone sports the Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 chipset (MSM7225A) with smooth graphics and the ability to work with the Neon command extension.  I managed to install the VLC Neon for Android application although the number of supported streaming formats was somehow more limited than on the Experia Mini Pro (this one uses the more feature-rich Snapdragon 2 chipset)

This is the most up to date Android version (4.0.x) I have found so far for this price point.  There’s no doubt that the intense competition is bringing about real bargains for Android enthusiasts.

VLC works out of the box with the Sony Ericsson Experia mini pro (sk17a)

Category: Android 2.3 devices,chipsetswpgeorge @ 9:14 pm

We are happy to report that the Sony Experia Mini Pro (sk17a) (pdadb profile) works right out of the box with the stunning new VideoLan VLC Neon Beta Android application found at the Google Play market. (look for VLC neon). I threw at it every .FLV file I could think of  (max 720p resolution) with impeccable image and sound.

Of course, this phone has the Neon Armv7 CPU and it shows what all that extra money bought (Sorry, Alcatel Vodafone Smartphone 2 owners, I tried but it but the app does not work yet with this beta version)

We manage to unearth that Sony Experias like this one have the Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset and Neon support.

If you would like further detailed information about testing for Neon instructions, you can follow the advice at Samurai-apps.com

All in all the experience was so smooth and can’t wait to keep upgrading until VLC becomes the de facto standard for Android.
